Port Stephens holds one of Australia's largest bottlenose dolphin populations, with over 140 individuals resident year-round in the sheltered waters between Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay.
The pod's stability, protected by marine sanctuary boundaries established in 1991, has made the bay a reliable zone for close-range sightings without the seasonal volatility of migratory whale routes. Six kilometres south, the Worimi Conservation Lands shelter the largest moving coastal dune system in the Southern Hemisphere, a 32-kilometre expanse of wind-sculpted sand rising to 30 metres above sea level.
The combination emerged not from marketing but from geography. Nelson Bay's d'Albora Marina and Anna Bay's dune access points sit 15 minutes apart by road, close enough that operators began pairing morning dolphin departures with afternoon sandboarding transfers in the early 2010s. The pairing solved a practical problem: Port Stephens drew visitors for its marine life, but few stayed beyond a single cruise. Adding the dunes extended dwell time and distributed visitor pressure across two distinct precincts, each with separate carrying capacities and infrastructure.
Stockton Beach, part of the Worimi lands returned to the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council in 2001, operates under joint management that limits vehicle access to designated tracks and concentrates sandboarding activity within a 400-hectare zone. The sand is Pleistocene quartz, fine-grained and pale gold, blown inland over 6,000 years and reshaped by westerlies into steep slip faces ideal for tobogganing. Unlike the static dunes at Lancelin or Cervantes, Worimi's crests migrate several metres annually, erasing tracks within days and requiring local knowledge to locate the fastest descents.
Dolphin cruise vessels, capped at 100 passengers by Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park regulations, deploy hydrophones to locate the pod acoustically before visual contact. Skippers maintain a 50-metre exclusion zone, though dolphins frequently approach boats voluntarily, riding bow waves and vocalising in patterns researchers have linked to individual identification. The 90-minute loop traces the inner bay from Corlette Point to Fingal Island, passing oyster leases, rocky headlands, and the submerged remains of the 1898 wreck of the PS Myola, visible at low tide as a skeletal iron frame colonised by sponges and ascidians.
